Let Your Light Shine - Matthew 5:16

Year 5: Atlantis

Atlantis – Mrs Cornelius (DHT) and Mrs Douthwaite

Welcome to Atlantis Class!

We are a bubbly bunch of enthusiastic learners who are looking forward to a superb year in Year 5. We enjoy working together, asking insightful questions (lots of them) and having fun with our friends.

Our Learning displays:

Term 4: Plastic pollution in our oceans, seas and rivers

Term 5: Ancient Greek Myths

Maths Support Videos

Short Multiplication: Multiplying a 3 digit number by a 1 digit number.

Multiplication: Multiplying a 2 digit number by a 2 digit number.

Term 6 – Chronology

This afternoon has been all about chronology! We started our afternoon exploring different historical time, deciding whether they came before or after the Ancient Greek period we are studying this term.

Then we were able to do our own research into finding out what else was happening in the world at the same time as the Ancient Greece period, comparing developments with those occurring in Greece.

Term 6 – Ancient Greece

We started our new project ‘How did Ancient Greece become a united country?’ by exploring a range of primary and secondary sources.  Just like archaeologists, we were able to deduce information about different aspects of Greek life from the sources we explored.

Spirited arts competition

After exploring the ‘God’s Great Earth’ we practised using tone and shading to colour and paint natural objects in more realistic shades of colour. We will use these skills later in our own creations which represent ‘God’s Great Earth’.

Blue Peter Climate Heroes

After learning all about climate change, we have all made 3 pledges about how we can reduce our impact by saving power, recycling and planting wild flowers in our school.

We have all applied for the Green Blue Peter badge and hope to share photos of them with you soon.

RE Week: May 2021

We have been exploring our school environment and identifying things in the natural world that we find amazing!

We sketched them, took rubbings and took photographs.

Some of our observations included:

  • “The smell and colour of the fresh green grass”
  • “The shades of colour in each and every leaf”
  • “The flowers that make our world beautiful- each one with a unique design”
  • “Plants where new life grows in the place of something has previously died”

Term 5 Science Week

This week was science week. We have been making our own lava lamps using water, oil and effervescent tablets.

Greece vs UK.  Where would you rather live?

We have created our own TV shows exploring different aspects of Greek and UK life.  After learning about the different aspects throughout the term, this was a fun opportunity to show everything we had learnt.   The areas we have explored include the landscape, the climate, the economy, the job opportunities and the housing on offer. We considered the positives and negatives of each country then shared which country we’d rather live in and why.

Term 4 Pond dipping

In science we have been learning all about life cycles so we visited our school pond to see a lifecycle in action. We discovered lots of frogspawn as well as some very friendly frogs!  We will be observing the frogspawn over time to see how it changes as the lifecycle progresses.

Term 4 Forest School

Atlantis have been out exploring our forest area, working in teams to create a 3D piece of art.

Term 4 Science

This week was science week. We have been making our own lava lamps using water, oil and effervescent tablets.

Term 4 Science

As part of our Science Week investigations we made origami frogs in difference sizes or out of different materials. We then tested these to see which ones hopped the furthest. Recording our findings in a table and then on a graph. At the end of the week we create bottle rockets to observed the reaction between vinegar and bicarbonate of soda.

Term 4 Forest School

Atlantis have been exploring the forest area and pond dipping.  We have been studying some of the frog spawn we found and are observing closely to watch for changes.

Term 3: Drawing

We have been developing our drawing skills so that we can combine drawing and collage for our final pieces of work.  We considered how we could use line drawing, shading, smudging and pointillism to show shape and movement.

It took a lot of perseverance to get them to a stage we were happy with but we are so proud of the outcomes.

Term 3: The Water Cycle

We have created our own water cycles so that we can observe the water cycle in action.

Term 3: The Water Cycle

Atlantis have created 3D models to share their knowledge and understanding of the water cycle with others.

Term 2: End Outcome

Atlantis applied their ICT and history skills to create their own powerpoints about World War I. Try out the hyperlinks in our presentations to find the area you would like to learn more about.

RE reflections: What kind of King is Jesus?

What was life like in the trenches?

We have been finding out about life in the trenches inspired by Keith Campion’s book, The Last Post and artefacts kindle lent to us by Kingswood Heritage Museum.

We sent our writing to the author of The Last Post, Keith Campion. He was kind enough to read through it and sent us this lovely response.

Atlantis Christmas Performance

Atlantis worked hard to prepare a brilliant virtual Christmas Performance of ‘Who took all the Loo Roll’ and shared it with parents via class dojo.

November 2020 – Joe Wicks

This week we have been completing the Joe Wicks Children in Need 5 minute move every day so that we can start the day active happy and raring to learn.

November 2020 – Hockey

We have been developing our hockey skills on the MUGA.

November 2020

Atlantis and Endeavour walked to Warmley War Memorial. Both classes read poems and facts about Remembrance Day then held a minutes silence. They also had chance to explore the memorial gardens and look at the names of those recorded on the memorial for WW1, our topic this term. We laid a wreath of poppies, made by the children, on the memorial from St Barnabas.

Please view some photos and video of the Remembrance Events.
