History

History Intent 

As historians in St Barnabas we develop our knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world through focusing on significant people, events and contexts. We develop our enquiry skills to support, evaluate, ask perceptive questions and challenge our own and others’ views using historical evidence from a range of sources. We think critically and communicate our ideas effectively to a range of audiences. Through engaging topics and focus of significant people, children will develop a passion and curiosity about the past, understanding why people interpret the past in different ways and how the past has shaped the present we see today.  

The history curriculum at St Barnabas draws from and makes use of the immediate local area of Warmley and the wider local areas of Bath and Bristol. We focus on how and why our local community has changed over time, enabling the children to develop a deep understanding of the rich history of their locality. We then extend this on a more global scale through learning about a diverse range of communities throughout history so our pupils will understand more about themselves as members of society, develop their cultural capital and prepare themselves for the future as more informed citizens.
