Online Safety

At St Barnabas Primary School we really value how the internet can complement and enhance the learning of pupils. Many of your children will enjoy using technology and the internet just as much as we do.

Class Dojo is a great app for communicating with the school community and you can expect weekly updates from your class pages.

At St Barnabas we believe that teaching children about the benefits of their digital world is as important as the dangers so online safety plays an important part of our curriculum. 

Promoting Online Safety both at home and in school in this way enables us to engage the children in their learning, with a mutual understanding that there are many positive aspects to their online lives.

For parents to promote online safety at home…

  • BBC Own It – A really useful, child-friendly site for a range of purposes, including online safety. 
  • ChildNeT  – Top Tips on Gaming. 
  • Internet Matters – apps guide for parents 
  • NSPCC Online Safety – lots of useful advice for keeping children safe when they are using the internet, social networks, apps and games.  

Key questions for parents to check:

Do you have parental controls on devices in your home that children have access to?
Do you have internet filtering set up on devices at home?
Do you talk to your child about age appropriate sites and content?
Does your child know what to do if they come across something inappropriate?

To set controls on a child’s phone: 

IPhone – Go to Settings and tap Screen Time. Tap Content & Privacy Restrictions and enter your Screen Time passcode. Tap Content Restrictions, then tap Web Content. Choose Unrestricted Access, Limit Adult Websites or Allowed Websites 

Android – Open the Google Play app. 
Tap the profile icon in the top right corner. 
Click on Settings > Family > Parental controls. 
Turn on Parental controls. 
Shield your parental controls with a PIN. 
Select the type of content you want to filter. 
Choose how to filter or restrict access. 

Useful websites for children to encourage online safety at home

  • Google Be Internet Awesome (Interland) – very engaging and interactive resource to promote various aspects of life online.  
  • Think U Know – containing internet safety advice for those aged from 5 to 16, along with parents and teachers, this site is produced by CEOP (the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre). 
  • BBC Own It – A really useful, child-friendly site for a range of purposes, including online safety.
